St Newlyn East 0 St Columb Major 2

St Columb have given themselves every chance of qualifying for the knock-out stage of the League Cup thanks to a victory over St Newlyn East. In a competitive first half the home side had the greater amount of possession but St Columb were always dangerous on the break. Aaron Hawken made a great run but Newlyn keeper Andy Wheildhon denied him as he tried to take the ball around him. The home side hit the crossbar and should have taken the lead from the penalty spot following a Paul Hawken foul, but the spot kick was pulled wide by a Newlyn midfielder. Luke Worrall thought he had given St Columb the lead when he ran onto a Wayne Ferguson through ball, but his chip was just turned over by Wheildon.

Major showed more control in the second half as the home team started to run out of ideas. Another excellent counter attack resulted in Worrall being clattered by Wheildon, who had to be substituted as a result. Steve Floyd-Norris took over in goal, but was sent the wrong way from Ryan Ivamy's penalty. Major's defence withstood more pressure from the home side and Worrall sealed the victory when he latched onto a pass from Nick Trevenna and lobbed the helpless Floyd-Norris.

St Columb Major 2 Wadebridge 0

St Columb Major are still in with a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the League Cup thanks to a well deserved victory over Wadebridge. St Columb dominated possession and pressurised Wadebridge all over the pitch in the first half, but failed to take the lead. Nick Trevenna cut inside from the right wing but had his shot saved, and later in the half crossed for Casey Hawkey who couldn't quite apply the finish to beat Josh Grills in the visitors goal. Wadebridge were a threat on the counter attack but Giles Reynolds wasted their best chance when he shot wide just before half time.

The home side gradually increased the pressure in the second half, with substitute Ben Atherton hitting two shots narrowly over. Jamie Selwood wad Wadebridge's best chance of the match when he headed a corner over from 8 yards. A few minutes later Simon Mitchell showed him how to do it when he attacked a Trevenna corner and powerfully headed home. As Wadebridge pushed for an equaliser they left spaces at the back and Wayne Ferguson secured the win when he jinked past a couple of defenders and slotted the ball past Grills.

St Columb 1 Bodmin 0

St Columb Major picked up their first three points of the cup competition against winless Bodmin Town from the Premier Division. Wayne Ferguson gave Major the lead early in the match when he robbed Bodmin ‘keeper Chris Pearce and ran the ball into the empty net. Ferguson should have extended the lead when Simon Mitchell headed a deep free kick back across the goal but unfortunately Ferguson’s header crept past the post. Bodmin’s only real chance of the match came when Andy Scott was judged to have tripped a Bodmin forward, but the home side felt justice was done when Scott pulled off a great save from Darren Hoare’s spot kick.

Major created plenty of chances in the second half but failed to kill the game off. Mitchell could have scored a couple but the closest he came was hitting the post and Ryan Ivamy had a shot from a couple of yards saved by Pearce. Scott Taylor was a constant threat to Bodmin but in the end one goal was enough for the home side.

Holsworthy 2 St Columb Major 3

St Columb Major made a long journey to Holsworthy looking to build upon two draws in their opening two matches. Major started well and caused the home defence quite a few problems especially from set pieces as Ryan Ivamy flashed a near post header just wide. The visitor’s strikers combined well as Scott Taylor played a through ball for Luke Worrall who scored his third goal in three games to give Major the lead. Worrall returned the favour minutes later but unfortunately Taylor’s first time shot was blocked by the ‘keeper. Major seemed to switch off for a few minutes and they paid the price when poor marking at a corner lead to a simple finish for Paul Blackwood. Another defensive lapse saw Holsworthy take the lead through Andy Parker but before half time Ivamy equalised when he headed in a Nick Trevenna corner.

The heat seemed to really take its toll in the second half as both defences became stretched and both sets of forwards missed some chances. In the final ten minutes Simon Mitchell claimed all three points for Major when he climbed well in the penalty box and glanced in Trevenna’s second assist of the match.

St Columb 1 St Newlyn East 1

St Columb drew their second match in a row against old rivals St Newlyn East, promoted from the Duchy Premier League. Major struggled in the first half and the visitors took the lead when Bobby-Lee Johns robbed Ryan Ivamy and ran in unchallenged to slot the ball past Andy Scott. Newlyn sat on their lead and could have scored a couple of further goals on the break through player manager Gary Whieldon.

The second half was a different story with Major piling on pressure without creating a host of chances. Luke Worrall scored for the second game running when he ran onto a Scott Taylor pass and lobbed the onrushing 'keeper. Casey Hawkey had a great chance to win the match late on for Major but he couldn't quite swivel enough to keep his shot on target.

St Columb 1 Roche 1

The opening match of any season is always interesting, this game especially so as former St Columb manager Henry Shazell has taken up the Assistant’s role at Roche. Major started well playing some neat football but Roche were well organised and closed them down all over the pitch. The home side took the lead when a cleared corner landed at the feet of Luke Worrall, who lifted the ball into the top corner from the edge of the penalty box. Major took their foot off the gas and Roche took full advantage when Tom Julian powerfully headed in from a well worked corner. Matt Gummow should have given the visitors the lead when he rushed through unmarked but he lifted the ball over ‘keeper Andy Scott and just wide of the post.

Roche continued well early in the second half and Scott was forced into a couple of good saves to keep the score level. Major came on strong towards the end of the game and Worrall was unlucky as a shot clipped the outside of the post. Major were denied what looked like a clear penalty when Simon Mitchell was pushed in the back as he went up for a header late on in the game. The game finished frantically as both sides pushed for a winning goal but in the end were forced to settle for a point.
